The DFW Playwrights’ Alliance and the Dallas HUB Theater are presenting a series of staged readings throughout the year that will serve to showcase works in progress by local playwrights. These readings serve a dual purpose. First, the playwright is afforded an opportunity to see his or her work read by actors in front of an audience in order to gauge reaction to the work during the development process. Second, audiences get a rare behind the scenes look at how a play is made and to participate in the development of new work by some of the Dallas / Ft. Worth area’s best playwrights.

Ruby Rose Rides Again
by Jim Tyler Anderson

January 31, 2006 - 7:00 p.m.

Ruby Rose Lassater is an aging cowgirl; a self-proclaimed "star of radio, rodeo and real life." Her favorite horse, "Go-girl the Pony Princess" is aging, too, and Ruby has finally decided to "do the kindest thing" for her. Ruby's daughter, Iris, and granddaughter, Rosanna, can't seem to agree on anything. Ruby's long-running syndicated radio show has lost its sponsor, and is about to be cancelled, and her beloved Dutch Oven Ranch may be lost to a housing development. Ruby must rally the women of her little family to produce one last radio show with all-new live music, featuring Ruby's band, The Dutch Oven Drovers. As they prepare for the performance, Ruby confronts some old ghosts from her past, and both Iris and Rosanna learn lessons about life, love and the cowgirl way of life.

Book and Lyrics are by Jim Tyler Anderson, with additional lyrics and music by Lou Ann Petty. Johnny Petty, Ken Dickinson and Pam Niblett also collaborated on the music.

One Nation / Under God
by John Mallory Land

March 28, 2006 - 7:00 p.m.

One Nation / Under God examines life in America a few years down the road, as social and political trends follow the current trajectory. An uninformed populace believes there is still a middle class and that the government’s actions are motivated by a mandate to protect the people from a continually gathering threat abroad and at home. To avoid being sent to one of the internment camps for persons at high risk of contracting the new super-virus VAIDS, Ruth and her life-partner Kris seek refuge with Ruth’s brother Thad and his family—but who can be trusted in this increasingly Fundacentric future?
